Work Authorization and Tax Guidance for US-Based Talent
We get a lot of questions about work authorization and tax guidance for US-based talent.
None of the below information should constitute legal advice. All contractors are responsible for determining their own immigration status and requirements and ensuring they are eligible to work.
Work Authorization Statuses
We work with a variety of work authorization statuses in the United States, including but not limited to:
-
US Citizens and Permanent Residents: Eligible to work without any restrictions.
-
F-1 Visa Holders (International Students): Eligible under specific conditions as outlined below.
-
Other Visa Types: Handled according to the specific work authorization attached to the visa. Get in touch with us via work@mercor.com to discuss your specific situation.

Special Considerations for F-1 Visa Holders
If you are holding an F-1 visa, we recognize the following categories:
- Optional Practical Training (OPT):
-
Pre/Post Completion OPT: We will engage with you once this is approved, but will only be able to share an offer letter and termination notice with you. We understand that some universities and institutions require more documentation and we are not able to provide this.
-
STEM OPT: Due to the additional operational overhead, we do not engage contractors under STEM OPT status.
- Curricular Practical Training (CPT):
- Contractors under CPT can be engaged if the work is integral to their curriculum and authorized by their educational institution. We will provide only an offer letter and termination notice in these cases.
